By Barth Ndubuwah, Port Harcourt
The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) company has launched the 2025 edition of its annual Science Quiz and Science Project Exhibition, focusing on advancing renewable energy innovations among secondary school students in Rivers State.
This year’s competition, which began on Wednesday, is designed to spark creativity, enhance problem-solving abilities, and encourage practical applications of science and technology. It aligns with global efforts to transition towards more sustainable energy solutions.
Dr Sophia Horsfall, General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, described the initiative as a call to action for young innovators to contribute towards a cleaner, greener future.
“This is more than just a quiz; it’s about equipping Nigeria’s future scientists, engineers, and policymakers with the knowledge they need to drive sustainable energy solutions. We are nurturing the minds that will shape Nigeria’s energy transition,” she stated.
The 2025 competition is set to take place across multiple locations, including Bonny, Khana, Port Harcourt, Omoku, and Oyigbo. It consists of two main components: the Science Quiz and the Science Project Exhibition.
The quiz unfolds in three phases: the Olympiad, the Championship, and the Grand Finale. Dragnet Solutions Limited, the competition’s facilitator, revealed that the Olympiad stage will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), allowing participation from public secondary schools across Rivers State.
The quiz is divided into two categories: the SS1 category, where winners will be determined at the Championship stage, and the SS2 category, where finalists will progress to the Grand Finale for the ultimate prize. Meanwhile, the Science Project Exhibition will commence at the Championship stage, with finalists competing in the Grand Finale.
The event is being organised in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State chapter.
According to NLNG’s External Relations Manager, beyond promoting academic excellence, the competition aims to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields, which are essential for Nigeria’s technological and economic development.
“In the 2024 edition, Government Girls Secondary School, Oyigbo, secured the SS2 category title, while Community Secondary School, Igbo-Etche, emerged victorious in the SS1 category,” she noted.
“As the world transitions towards clean energy, initiatives like NLNG’s Science Quiz and Science Project Exhibition play a crucial role in preparing young Nigerians to take the lead in renewable energy innovation. This competition not only assesses knowledge but also encourages students to develop practical, sustainable solutions to real-world energy challenges,” she added.
