Rivers Lawmakers fail to reconvene, as impeachment proceedings stall

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary on Thursday, stalling the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The House had adjourned its first sitting of the year last Thursday after commencing hearings on allegations including the unauthorised demolition of the Assembly complex and extra-budgetary spending.

The lawmakers were scheduled to reconvene on January 15, 2026.

However, as of noon on Thursday, there were no signs of activity at the makeshift legislative quarters along Aba Road. No new date for resumption has been announced, and the leadership of the Assembly has offered no explanation for the delay.

Attempts to reach the House Chairman on Information, Eneme George, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages.

The stalemate has heightened political tension in the state, raising questions about the Assembly's procedural strategy and the future of the impeachment process.
