President Tinubu’s vision for Nigerian students is to bridge the gap to the modern world
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalize Nigerian universities to meet the evolving demands of the modern world. Tinubu made this statement in Nsukka during the 52nd Convocation of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), where postgraduate degrees, diplomas, and honorary doctorate degrees were conferred upon four distinguished Nigerians.
He emphasized the importance of addressing funding challenges for research and infrastructure development within universities to enable them to adapt to the changing global landscape. “Recognizing the pivotal roles universities play in research and human resource development, my administration will strive to reposition Nigerian universities to meet the dynamic demands of the modern world,” he stated.
Tinubu, represented by Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, stressed the need for prudence and accountability in the management and utilization of funds allocated to universities. “I will consistently advocate for fiscal responsibility and transparency in the use of government funds within universities,” he asserted.
He also expressed his desire for stability and harmony in universities, aiming to eliminate the disruptions caused by prolonged industrial actions. “I am committed to fostering a conducive environment for learning and research by promoting stability and harmony within our universities,” Tinubu affirmed.
The president congratulated the recipients of postgraduate degrees and urged them to leverage their education to address the country’s challenges effectively. He also commended those awarded honorary doctorate degrees and Emeritus Professors, encouraging them to view the recognition as a catalyst for further contributions to UNN and society.
In his remarks, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife and Chancellor of UNN, urged the graduands and honorary awardees to serve as ambassadors of unity in the country.
Earlier, Prof. Charles Igwe, Vice-Chancellor of UNN, announced that 1,438 postgraduate degrees and diplomas had been awarded at the Convocation. This included 412 Doctorate degrees (Ph.D), 951 Master’s degrees, and 75 postgraduate diplomas. Igwe extended congratulations to all the graduands, highlighting their academic achievements and character.
He also announced that the convocation marked his final tenure as the VC of UNN, as his term would conclude in June. Among those honored with honorary doctorate degrees were Sir Emeka Offor, CEO of Chrome Group of Companies; Brig. Gen. J.O.J Okoloagu (Rtd), an alumnus of UNN; Prof. El Anatsui, a renowned Sculptor; and Mr. Igo Weli, a Director at the Shell Petroleum Development Company.
Additionally, ten retired Professors of UNN, including Prof. Bartholomew Okolo and Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, were elevated to the status of “Professor Emeritus.
