Police uncover illegal mortuary as Nigerians allege extra-judicial killings

A wave of horror and controversy has swept through Imo State following the discovery of a suspected organ-harvesting dungeon and illegal mortuary containing over 100 decomposing bodies.
The grim discovery, made by operatives of the Imo State Police Command, has triggered a manhunt for the facility's owner, who reportedly fled the scene prior to the raid.
According to Police sources, the site was uncovered following intelligence reports regarding suspicious activities in the area.
Upon storming the facility, security operatives found scores of corpses, some of which allegedly showed signs of missing organs, leading authorities to label the site a hub for a sophisticated organ-trafficking syndicate.
The police have since declared the proprietor of the facility wanted, vowing to dismantle the network responsible for what they described as a crime against humanity.
However, the police narrative has been met with fierce skepticism and outrage on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where the conversation has shifted from the alleged organ ring to accusations of state-sanctioned violence.
The controversy centers on the involvement of the "Tiger" operatives a reference to the Tiger Base unit of the Imo State Police Command, which functions as the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
For months, the unit has faced allegations from civil society groups and local residents regarding high-handedness and extrajudicial measures in their fight against insecurity in the Southeast.
Following the announcement of the raid, Nigerians on X began questioning the timing and the details of the discovery.
Many users alleged that the illegal mortuary might, in fact, be a dumping ground for victims of extrajudicial killings, suggesting that the organ harvesting narrative could be a cover-up to deflect accountability for the high number of missing persons in the state.
Critics pointed out that the sheer number of bodies over 100 would require a significant operational footprint that would be difficult to conceal from local security oversight for a long period.
"How does an individual run a mortuary with 100 bodies without the knowledge of the police who have checkpoints everywhere?" one user queried, while others demanded an independent autopsy and DNA profiling of the victims to determine the true cause of death.
As the manhunt for the fleeing suspect continues, the Imo State Police Command has urged the public to provide information that could lead to an arrest.
Meanwhile, human rights organizations are calling for a transparent investigation to unravel the true identity of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
