Police resume enforcement of tinted glass permit Jan 2

...insists court did not restrain enforcement
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy, effective January 2, 2026.
The Force Headquarters stated that the decision follows a careful review of emerging security concerns, specifically a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorized tinted glasses.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police clarified that the enforcement is resuming pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court.
Addressing misconceptions regarding the legal status of the policy, the statement noted that the court had at no point restrained the Police from enforcing the law. Instead, the initial suspension of enforcement was a voluntary move by the Force "in the spirit of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience" to allow motorists time to regularize their documentation.
However, the police noted that this window of grace has been exploited by criminal elements.
"Recent trends, however, reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes," Hundeyin stated.
Consequently, the Force deemed it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard communities.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has assured the public that the renewed enforcement will be conducted with utmost professionalism and respect for the fundamental rights of citizens.
He reiterated the Force's commitment to upholding the rule of law while collaborating with stakeholders to ensure national security.
Motorists who require the permit have been advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with legal procedures before the January 2 deadline.
