Police launch social media surveillance on officers over unauthorised content

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched a social media surveillance to identify officers engaging in unauthorised online activities, following a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing trend of police personnel creating videos, conducting live sessions, and posting content online while in uniform or in circumstances that identify them as members of the Force without official approval.

According to the statement, officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain.

To ensure compliance, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers to sensitise personnel under their commands and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

Disu also mandated the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to strengthen surveillance across social media platforms and identify erring officers, warning that supervisory officers will be held accountable for violations within their jurisdictions.

The new development underscores the police command commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, while reaffirming its resolve to maintain public trust and institutional integrity.
