Osun LG crisis: APC accuses Adeleke government of plotting public disorder

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, alongside local government chairmen and councillors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC), have accused the Osun State Government of deliberately escalating the lingering local government crisis to trigger tension and public disturbance.
The APC leveled the allegation on Friday while reacting to a recent judgment delivered by the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo.
The party strongly warned members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elected during the February 22, 2025 local government election against what it described as a wrongful interpretation of the court ruling.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo, the APC Legal Adviser, Barrister (Chief) Adegoke Ogunsola, insisted that the reinstated APC chairmen and councillors remain the legitimate occupants of their offices, emphasizing that the judgment delivered on June 15, 2026, has already been appealed.
Ogunsola disclosed that an application for a stay of execution has been filed and served on all relevant parties.
He stressed that any move by PDP-elected officials to forcefully take over local government secretariats before the determination of the appeal would undermine due process and directly threaten peace in the state.
According to Ogunsola, the APC officials had originally approached the Federal High Court in Osogbo on September 12, 2025, seeking judicial clarification on the commencement and duration of their tenure based on existing laws guiding local government administration in Osun State.
He explained that although the court dismissed their case, the decision was immediately challenged at the Court of Appeal, adding that the pending appeal remains a valid legal process that all parties must respect.
Ogunsola maintained that the interpretation being given to the judgment by the Osun State Government and its allies claiming it validates the February 22, 2025 local government election is highly misleading and capable of causing unnecessary unrest.
The APC leaders accused Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration of attempting to force PDP officials into local government offices by seeking police protection for them, describing the move as a dangerous strategy capable of creating an avoidable crisis.
They further argued that the PDP chairmen and councillors were not parties to the suit before the Federal High Court, noting that the court did not issue any specific order recognizing them as beneficiaries of the judgment.
Ogunsola noted that law enforcement agencies are fully aware that an appeal has been filed and that the motion for a stay of execution has been served, warning that any premature attempt to enforce the judgment could lead to a total breakdown of law and order.
Meanwhile, NewsDirect exclusively gathered that Chairmen from the PDP/Accord Party are currently regrouping to take over the local government secretariats on Monday following the court judgement.
Our investigations also reveal a heavy and noticeable deployment of personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at various council secretariats across the state
