Oriire abduction: Senate reveals identities of fallen soldiers

The Senate has revealed the identities of the soldiers who lost their lives during the successful operation to rescue abducted school pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and co-sponsored by 108 other senators, the upper legislative chamber observed a solemn tribute to honor the deceased, describing their ultimate sacrifice as the highest demonstration of courage, patriotism, and commitment to national service.

During the lead debate, Senator Bamidele disclosed the identities of the security officers who lost their lives or sustained injuries in the line of duty.

The deceased personnel include Lieutenant F. A. Isaac (N/20349) of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa (23NA/84/4604) of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome (F/No. 234511) of the Nigeria Police Force. A fourth security operative who died during the operation was also recognized, though their identity remains undisclosed.

It was also revealed that Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain (16NA/75/6430), also of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army, sustained injuries during the rescue mission and is currently receiving care.

The highly coordinated operation brought an end to a grueling 56-day captivity period for 39 pupils and seven teachers who were seized by terrorists in Oriire.

Senator Fatai Buhari, who seconded the motion, recalled the day of the abduction as a “Black Friday” for his senatorial district.

Following the kidnapping, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu immediately directed the Armed Forces and cooperating security agencies to deploy all available lawful military assets to secure the victims’ unconditional release.

The intelligence-driven campaign lasted over 50 days, culminating in a successful rescue on Friday, July 10.

While commending President Tinubu for his decisive leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, the lawmakers urged the Federal Government to ensure the prompt and seamless payment of all statutory death benefits, insurance claims, pensions, and other welfare entitlements to the families of the fallen officers.

The lawmakers also called for sustained military operations against terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits across the country.

They emphasized the critical need to equip the Armed Forces with modern surveillance technology, advanced equipment, improved logistics, and enhanced training.

The Senate concluded by reaffirming its commitment to legislative measures that bolster national security, expressing confidence that the successful operation in Oyo State sends an unmistakable message that criminal elements will find no safe haven in Nigeria.
