One week after APC exit, Iyabo Obasanjo returns to PDP

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) barely one week after resigning from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Iyabo had previously defected from the PDP to the APC in January after declaring her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.

At the time, the former Ogun State Commissioner for Health accused the PDP of sidelining influential members and only engaging them during election periods.

Expressing her frustration with the party, she stated that she considered them idiots because elections are about people, and failing to reach out to prominent party members makes it impossible to win.

Her initial move to the APC marked her return to active politics after an absence of about 15 years.

However, the renowned epidemiologist announced her resignation from the APC last Monday after failing to secure the party’s governorship ticket.

She alleged that she was disrespected, rejected, and unfairly treated by the leadership of the party in Ogun State.

In a dramatic turn of events, Iyabo made a surprise appearance at the official unveiling of the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Dr. Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta on Monday.

Her arrival was greeted with cheers and excitement as party leaders and supporters gave her a warm reception.

Supporters surrounded the former senator, chanting solidarity songs and hailing her as she acknowledged the enthusiastic crowd.

Speaking briefly at the event, Iyabo assured party members and residents of Ogun State that the alleged era of denying the PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, his mandate was over.

She also told her supporters to expect her formal return to the PDP in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the party has announced Senator Iyabo Obasanjo as its candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the forthcoming elections.
