The Ondo State Police Command has dismantled a human trafficking syndicate operating in Akure, the state capital, rescuing 40 Ghanaian nationals who were allegedly trafficked into Nigeria under the guise of securing employment opportunities.
Operatives of the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS) carried out the operation following a formal petition channelled through the INTERPOL Liaison Office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The raid initially led to the rescue of one David Angerinya, which eventually uncovered 39 other victims held under similar false pretences.
In a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, and made available to journalists, the suspects arrested in connection with the trafficking ring were identified as Hayford Nyamekye, Awine Alex, and Kojo Felix.
According to the statement, the suspects are currently in custody and assisting operatives with further investigation into the syndicate’s operations.
Preliminary findings revealed that the network had been luring unsuspecting West African citizens into Nigeria with promises of lucrative job placements and visa packages to Canada and other Western nations. However, upon arrival, the victims were subjected to various forms of exploitation.
The police also discovered that many of the rescued Ghanaians were in possession of expired travel documents or none at all. Investigations have commenced to track down property owners and caretakers of buildings used to harbour the victims, as they are believed to be complicit in the illegal operations.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, reiterated the command’s determination to rid the state of human trafficking and other transnational organised crimes.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities within their communities to the nearest police formation, stressing that the command remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all residents and lawful visitors.
