Ogun pensioners commend Abiodun over release of N5.3bn gratuity

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun chapter, has commended Gov. Dapo Abiodun for releasing the sum of N5.3 billion gratuities to the state pensioners.

The pensioners, in a commendation letter to the governor on Tuesday, jointly signed by Waheed Oloyede and Bola Lawal, the Chairman and Secretary respectively, said the gesture would reduce backlog of accrued gratuities.

The pensioners noted that the state government had demonstrated a sincerity of purpose and a deep sense of consideration toward the elderly who have over the years been denied their entitlements.

They appreciated the government’s prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions which have afforded them the opportunity to plan for the procurement of some drugs.

“Mention should be made of the various palliatives and subsidies benevolently directed toward us in the recent past by your administration to cushion the effects of the present harsh economic situation.

“We humbly make a passionate plea to you for your kind approval of the consequential increase in pensions of the long standing retirees in line with the 2019 Federal Government Circular on Consequential Adjustment of Pensions.

“The paltry sum being received by most pensioners are grossly inappropriate to purchase required drugs for various health challenges, talk less of meeting with the demands of the present day economic realities,” the pensioners said.

They urged the governor to allow the representation of the pensioners along with those of the organised labour at the impending new national wage increase negotiation forum.

“This will put the pensioners at the same pedestal with the recent retirees in consonance with the Federal Government directive.

“We express our tacit, dedicated, committed and unwavering support to you and to your administration at all times,” they said.
