Ogun Assembly steps in as communities suffer from environmental fallout of Lagos Water Project

The Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Justice, Ethics, and Public Petitions has intervened in an ongoing environmental crisis in Ifo 2 Constituency, calling for immediate action to remedy damages linked to a Lagos water pipeline project.
The Committee’s move follows a petition from the Baale Akinosi Area Community Development Council, detailing serious environmental issues caused by the pipeline works along the Akute–Baale–Alausa–Oke-Aro corridor. The petition cited stagnant water, unpaved surfaces, and broken drainage systems as major threats to residents’ health and property.
At a hearing held on Thursday, Committee Chair Hon. Oluseun Adesanya directed the Lagos State Government and Salini Nigeria Limited, the contractor, to construct proper drainages, pave the pipeline route, and clear stagnant water immediately.
“This engagement seeks tangible solutions to the environmental degradation our constituents are enduring. The harm caused by this project was preventable, and we expect prompt corrective measures,” said Adesanya.
Present at the session were Engr. (Mrs.) Cecilia Olajide, a former Permanent Secretary in Ogun State; Mr. Olanrewaju Fashola; Engr. Murtala Lawal; and Daniele Cifola, representing Salini Nigeria Limited.
The Committee instructed the parties to prioritise restoring road usability, proper drainage, and public health in the affected communities.
Lawmakers including Hon. Folawewo Salami, Hon. Dickson Awolaja, and Hon. Babatunde Tella called for additional engagement with Ogun State’s Ministries of Environment, Works and Infrastructure, and Water Resources, as well as the Lagos Adiyan Waterworks.
The Committee pledged to hold further sessions to ensure a coordinated, multi-agency response to the environmental crisis and deliver relief to residents of Ifo 2.
