NSC hails Lagos as Nigeria’s leading sports hub after historic E1 boat championship

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended the Lagos State Government for positioning the state as Nigeria’s leading sports hub, following the successful hosting of the E1 Electric Boat Racing Championship  the first of its kind in Africa.

In a statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, the commission praised Lagos for joining global cities such as Monaco, London, Jeddah, and Venice in hosting the prestigious event.

Olopade described the championship, held over the weekend on the Lagos Lagoon, as a landmark achievement that cements Lagos’ growing reputation for international sporting excellence. He also highlighted other major events recently hosted by the state, including the Access Bank Lagos International Marathon, the Lagos International Badminton Classic, and the “Chaos in the Ring” Boxing Tournament.

“Lagos State is truly setting the pace and living up to its status as Nigeria’s foremost commercial city in sports development,” Olopade said, commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his visionary and corporate driven leadership in promoting sports as a tool for social and economic growth.

He reaffirmed that the NSC remains committed to President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a sustainable sports economy, adding that hosting global competitions like the E1 Series is a strategic step toward that goal.

Meanwhile, Team Brazil, backed by the Claure Group, emerged winners of the inaugural E1 Lagos Grand Prix, making history as the first champions on African soil. Pilots Timmy Hansen and Ieva Millere Hagin delivered an impressive performance to secure victory despite weather challenges, earning 38 championship points and bringing their season total to 89.
