No confirmed case of Hantavirus in Nigeria — NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that there is no outbreak of Hantavirus in Nigeria.
This was disclosed in a public advisory issued by the agency.
Despite the global alert, the agency confirms there are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in Nigeria, maintaining that the overall risk to the public remains low.
Hantaviruses are primarily carried by rodents and transmitted to humans through contact with infected urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated dust. Symptoms typically include fever, fatigue, body aches, and gastrointestinal issues, with severe cases leading to respiratory distress.
To mitigate any potential risk, the NCDC urged citizens to prevent rodent infestations, store food securely, and maintain rigorous hand hygiene.
The NCDC also noted that it is currently strengthening its surveillance systems for emerging infectious diseases and monitoring the international situation closely.
The agency also urged the public to rely exclusively on verified updates from official authorities and to avoid the spread of misinformation regarding the virus.
