Nigeria's future beyond oil: FG betting on Blue Economy as main revenue driver - Oyetola

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola has declared that the Federal Government is strategically repositioning the marine and blue economy to become Nigeria’s primary revenue source, ultimately replacing crude oil as the nation’s dominant income generator.
Oyetola made the statement on Friday at the Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos (UNILAG), during the official visit of the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Arsenio Domínguez.
The Minister highlighted the immense, untapped potential of the sector, framing it as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s future economic stability.
“Nigeria’s future lies beyond oil. The marine and blue economy is a goldmine that can drive sustainable economic growth, create millions of jobs, and position our nation as a global maritime hub,” Oyetola said in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Bolaji Akinola.
“We are determined to harness its full potential as the primary driver of our economy.”
He affirmed the government’s commitment to unlocking these opportunities through targeted investments in infrastructure, manpower development, and international partnerships.
Oyetola, an alumnus of UNILAG, stressed that realizing the government’s vision requires a new generation of skilled professionals and urged Nigerian youth to seize career opportunities within the sector.
"There are abundant opportunities for our young people in shipping, logistics, fisheries, shipbuilding, marine research, and offshore energy," he noted.
"The future of this sector, and indeed the future of Nigeria’s economy, rests on your shoulders."
He commended UNILAG and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for their collaboration in maritime manpower development, which included the establishment of a modern facility for the Institute of Maritime Studies.
The IMO chief also lauded NIMASA for donating the new building, commending Nigeria's investment in human capital.
Impressed by the infrastructure, Domínguez commended Nigeria’s leadership in securing the Gulf of Guinea and strengthening maritime safety frameworks.
He noted that Nigeria’s investments demonstrate a commitment that aligns with the IMO’s mission of safe, secure, and sustainable shipping.
