Nigeria set to host Coventry University Campus

In a landmark move for the nation’s tertiary education sector, the Federal Government has finalized a Transnational Education (TNE) partnership with Coventry University to establish a physical campus in Nigeria.

The initiative, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday, aims to bridge the gap between local accessibility and international academic standards.

The new campus will be situated within Alaro City, Lagos State, serving as a strategic hub for students seeking British-standard qualifications without the logistical and financial burdens of traveling abroad.

The curriculum is designed to address Nigeria’s specific economic and industrial needs.

The partnership will focus on high-demand sectors, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine, Advanced management and entrepreneurial programs, Technical and Vocational Education and Training aimed at bridging the national skills gap.

By ensuring that all degrees awarded on Nigerian soil are identical in status to those issued at Coventry’s UK campus, the government hopes to significantly enhance the global employability of Nigerian graduates.

The breakthrough follows high-level engagements in the United Kingdom led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa.

During the visit, the delegation met with UK university leaders and key investors to solidify the operational framework of the TNE model.

Dr. Alausa emphasized the social and economic benefits of the project, noting that it allows Nigerian parents to keep their children closer to home while still securing a world-class education at a fraction of the traditional cost.

While the project is currently moving through final regulatory hurdles, the Ministry expects the campus to open its doors for admissions between the third and fourth quarters of 2026.

The project is receiving significant backing from the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, signaling a long-term commitment to positioning Nigeria as a premier regional hub for innovation and knowledge.
