NFF denies FIFA cleared South Africa in Mokoena eligibility dispute

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rejected reports suggesting that FIFA cleared South Africa over the eligibility of midfielder Teboho Mokoena.
Ademola Olajire, NFF Director of Communications, said the federation had not received any official communication from FIFA regarding the matter.
“There has been no official communication to that effect. What people are reporting is a tweet on their X account. We don’t regard that as official communication,” he stated.
Mokoena played against Lesotho in a World Cup qualifier despite being suspended after receiving two yellow cards in previous matches. Lesotho lodged a protest, demanding a 3-0 win and the deduction of three points from South Africa.
FIFA has yet to issue a formal ruling six months after the incident, leaving uncertainty in Group C. If the protest is upheld, South Africa would lose three points, and Lesotho would gain three points. If rejected, South Africa keeps its 17 points.
Nigeria, which drew 1-1 with South Africa, is second in Group C with 11 points from eight matches. The Super Eagles will face Lesotho on October 10 in Bloemfontein and Benin Republic on October 16 in Uyo.
The outcome of the FIFA ruling could determine whether Nigeria qualifies directly for the 2026 World Cup or must pursue a play-off route.
