Former Senate Leader and Senator representing Borno South, Mohammed Ali Ndume has urged the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework, saying the country must adopt proactive measures to curb insecurity.
Ndume made the call during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday, where he discussed the nation’s security situation and recent efforts by security agencies to combat criminal activities.
He acknowledged the successes recorded by security operatives in rescuing victims of recent abductions, describing the operations as encouraging.
However, he maintained that the focus should be on preventing attacks before they occur rather than responding after lives have been put at risk.
The Senator stressed the need for improved intelligence gathering, better coordination among security agencies and greater investment in modern security equipment.
He added that collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments and local communities would help strengthen efforts to address insecurity.
Ndume also linked security to economic development, noting that a peaceful environment is necessary to attract investment, promote business activities and create employment opportunities.
According to him, insecurity continues to affect livelihoods and slow the country’s economic progress.
He further called for sustained support for security personnel through improved welfare, training and logistics, while urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
The lawmaker concluded that tackling insecurity requires a long-term strategy built on effective leadership, coordinated action and public participation, adding that consistent implementation of security policies will help restore confidence and promote national development.
