NDLEA Refutes Claims About Released Pilgrims’ Photos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has clarified that photographs currently circulating in the media, purportedly showing the three Nigerian pilgrims recently released by Saudi authorities, are not genuine.
This clarification was made in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr. Femi Babafemi.
Babafemi explained that following reports on the release of the three innocent Nigerian pilgrims in Jeddah, some media outlets had published images unrelated to the incident and presented them as pictures of the released individuals.
“For clarity, the photographs being circulated are not those of the three Nigerians who were detained in Jeddah,” he said, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to globally accepted standards for human rights protection, privacy, and the dignity of victims.
The NDLEA deliberately refrained from releasing or publishing photographs of the pilgrims in any of its official communications to ensure their privacy and protect them from undue public exposure. This decision, Babafemi noted, was intended to facilitate the safe reintegration of the pilgrims into society without stigma or public scrutiny.
He further stressed that the agency recognizes the crucial role of the media as a partner in disseminating information and promoting public awareness, but also reminded news platforms of the importance of accuracy and responsible reporting.
Babafemi urged all media outlets and digital platforms to refrain from using images that could misrepresent facts or undermine the dignity and rights of innocent persons.
The NDLEA’s clarification underscores the agency’s ongoing commitment to protecting the welfare of Nigerians abroad and ensuring that their return from detention is handled with sensitivity, respect, and compliance with international standards on human rights and victim protection.
By issuing the statement, the NDLEA reaffirms that the integrity and privacy of the three released pilgrims remain a top priority, even as the agency continues to engage with the public and the media in providing accurate information regarding such sensitive matters.
