NBC warns broadcasters against hate speech ahead of 2027 polls

The National Broadcasting Commission has warned television and radio stations that anchors who inject personal opinions, bully guests or deny opposing views risk sanctions for a “Class B breach” of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

In a statement dated April 17, 2026 by its Public Affairs Directorate, the regulator said it had observed a “sustained increase in breaches” of the 6th Edition of the Code across news, current affairs and political programmes as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The NBC said it would enforce strict compliance with provisions on fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech and incitement.

“As we approach the 2027 General Elections, the Commission hereby notifies all broadcasters and stakeholders that it will enforce strict and uncompromised compliance with every provision of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code,” it stated.

The commission noted that broadcast platforms were increasingly being used in ways that deviated from their core obligation to inform the public with accuracy, balance and professionalism.

It cited declining professionalism among anchors as a major concern, stressing that presenters must not express personal opinions and must ensure all sides to issues of public interest are fairly represented.

The NBC also warned against the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, citing rising instances of content capable of inciting crime, promoting disorder or undermining national unity.

“Henceforth, any anchor or presenter found to have expressed personal opinion as fact, bullied or intimidated a guest, denied fair hearing to opposing views, or otherwise compromised neutrality, shall be deemed to have committed a Class B breach,” the commission said.

It added that editorial responsibility rests with broadcasters and cannot be transferred to guests.

The NBC placed all stations on notice that compliance with the Code is mandatory, warning that inflammatory, divisive or unsubstantiated content would attract sanctions, adding that compliance is mandatory, not discretionary.

“Accordingly, the NBC places all Broadcasters on formal notice: Strict compliance with the Nigeria Broadcasting Code will be enforced across all News, Current Affairs, and Political programmes.

“As Nigeria enters a critical electoral period, the airwaves must not amplify tension or propagate misinformation. They must remain platforms for credible information, responsible discourse and national cohesion,” the statement added.
