NAFDAC alerts Nigerians to circulation of fake Kiss condoms

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning over the circulation of counterfeit Kiss condoms in several markets across Nigeria, cautioning consumers about serious health risks associated with their use.
The alert, issued on Monday via NAFDAC’s official X handle and referenced as Public Alert No. 042/2025, disclosed that the information was provided by DKT International Nigeria, the authorised marketing holder of Kiss condoms and a leading non-governmental organisation in contraceptive social marketing.
According to the agency, fake Kiss condoms have been discovered in major markets, including Onitsha, Idumota, Trade Fair, as well as markets in Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu and other locations nationwide.
NAFDAC explained that genuine Kiss condoms are designed to prevent unwanted pregnancies and protect users against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis, noting that counterfeit products compromise this protection and pose significant public health risks.
To help consumers identify genuine products, the agency stated that authentic Kiss condom packs contain clear instructions, storage and caution information, complete manufacturer details and lighter-coloured packaging with a visible condom image.
In contrast, counterfeit versions reportedly lack side-panel information, have darker packaging and images, plain white interiors with no condom image, incorrect or incomplete manufacturer addresses, and no storage or caution guidelines.
NAFDAC also highlighted differences in the physical appearance of the condoms, noting that genuine Kiss condoms are larger, oval-shaped, well-lubricated and have larger teat ends, while fake versions are thinner, rounder, less lubricated and have smaller teat ends.
The agency warned that the use of counterfeit condoms could lead to breakage, infections, allergic reactions and a false sense of protection, urging Nigerians to purchase only quality-assured condoms from approved sources.
NAFDAC disclosed that it has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify market surveillance and ensure the removal of falsified Kiss condoms nationwide.
It also encouraged healthcare professionals and members of the public to report suspected substandard or fake medical products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
