My goal is to make the wealth of Osun work for her citizens - Senator Omisore

In an exclusive interview with NewsDirect, Senator Iyiola Omisore laid out his vision for the state’s economic future, positioning a radical transformation of its agricultural sector and a strict local content policy as the twin cornerstones of his governorship campaign.

The Senator, who officially launched his bid for the 2026 gubernatorial election, argued that the state’s current development model is “economically unsustainable and morally indefensible,” promising a new chapter of prosperity built by and for the people of Osun. Excerpts.

Senator Omisore, you’ve just launched your 2026 governorship bid. What is the central theme of your campaign?

The state’s current development model is “economically unsustainable and morally indefensible.” My vision is to transform Osun into a state where agriculture becomes a profit-driven industry and where strict local content guides all government contracts.

Let’s start with agriculture. What exactly is your plan?

For too long, we have treated agriculture merely as a subsistence activity. My vision is to transition it into a full-blown, profit-driven industry.

This means creating a comprehensive value chain beyond basic farming. First, we boost productivity to produce a surplus that will feed the nation and generate substantial wealth for Osun. Then, instead of exporting raw produce, we will incentivize and establish agro-allied industries across all our local government areas for processing, packaging, and preserving. This is how we create jobs and add value right here at home.”

How do you plan to make that ecosystem work?

Through designated industrial zones, distribution hubs, and an enabling environment for both cottage industries and large-scale manufacturing.

You’ve been critical of ongoing construction projects in the state. Why?

The current story has indeed been one of capital flight. How many Osun indigenes are the primary contractors? How many of our local engineers, suppliers, and skilled workers are truly benefiting? The answer is, unfortunately, very few.

That model drains our resources without building local capacity. My solution is to implement a strict Local Content Act for government contracts. The goal is simple: the wealth of Osun must first and foremost work for the people of Osun. We will prioritize, mentor, and empower Osun-based businesses.

Many voters have heard similar promises before. Why should they trust yours?

This is not rocket science. What it requires is careful, strategic planning, flawless execution, and most importantly, the political will to stand up for our people against entrenched interests. I have the blueprint, the experience, and the unwavering determination to make this a reality.

Finally, what’s your message to the people of Osun as this campaign begins?

This goal cannot be achieved from the Government House alone. It is about effectively communicating and connecting with our people every single day... giving hope and a voice to every citizen... We are letting them know that their dreams for a prosperous life do not have to die. Together, we can realize them.”
