MCE raises alarm over APC convention, claims shrinking democratic space

The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has raised concerns over what it described as a growing threat to Nigeria’s democracy following recent developments within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on March 31, 2026, the group alleged that the APC’s national convention and preceding state congresses reflect a pattern of suppressed internal democracy and consolidation of power within a narrow leadership structure.

MCE claimed that the convention process, widely described as consensus-based, denied party members the opportunity for open and competitive participation in leadership selection.

According to the group, reports of parallel congresses, exclusion of aspirants, and sidelining of stakeholders in several states point to a deliberate effort to centralise control within the party.

The group further alleged that Nigeria is witnessing increasing pressure on dissenting voices, warning of what it described as the “criminalisation of dissent” through political and legal intimidation.

It argued that these developments could undermine democratic participation and weaken institutional checks and balances.

MCE also warned that if the trend continues, the 2027 General Elections risk losing credibility, becoming procedural rather than genuinely competitive.

The group noted that women, youths, and marginalised groups are increasingly excluded from meaningful political engagement, while civic actors face mounting challenges.

It called for urgent steps to safeguard democratic principles, including transparency, participation, and accountability in party processes.

Among its demands, MCE urged the APC to restore internal democracy by ensuring free, fair, and competitive participation in its activities.

The group also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enforce compliance with democratic standards in political party conduct.

It further appealed to Nigerians across political and social divides to resist what it described as authoritarian tendencies and defend democratic values.

The statement was signed by Comrade James Ezema, Media Coordinator of MCE.
