Market sustainability not power generation bane of Nigeria's power sector woes - NERC Chairman

...inugurates national regulators’ forum to promote regulatory synergy
The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musiliu Oseni has argued that the fundamental concern of the Nigerian power sector is not merely the volume of power generated but the sustainability of the market itself.
The Chairman made this known at the inauguration of the Forum of Nigerian Electricity Regulators (FoNER).
Speaking, Oseni noted that addressing this market problem is central to resolving the sector’s broader challenges and fulfilling the shared responsibility of driving national economic prosperity.
He further warned against the dangers of reductionism, which is the tendency to frame the sector's failures solely as isolated issues of generation, transmission, or distribution.
Inaugurating the forum, the NERC Chairman noted that the Forum is being inuagurated in accordance with Section 230(9) of the Electricity Act 2023.
The establishment of FoNER follows the creation of a Technical Working Group on September 26, 2025, which laid the groundwork for this institutional framework. The forum is designed to harmonize federal and state oversight to eliminate regulatory friction across the country.
Oseni emphasized that FoNER is structured to drive coordination and alignment across various jurisdictions.
He further stated that the Forum will create an environment where regulatory ideas are incubated, transparency is dominant, and disputes are resolved through constructive dialogue rather than protracted litigation.
