The lawmaker representing Akwanga, Nassarawa Eggon, and Wamba Federal Constituency, Hon. Jeremiah Umaru, has trained no fewer than 100 primary and secondary school teachers across the 35 electoral wards in his constituency to enhance their teaching capacity and improve students’ learning outcomes.
Speaking at the close of the training programme on Wednesday in Akwanga Local Government Area, Umaru said the initiative was part of his educational development blueprint aimed at strengthening teachers’ skills in school administration and the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for effective classroom delivery.
He pledged to sustain and expand the programme to cover all teachers in his constituency, stressing that investing in teachers was key to achieving global best practices in education.
The capacity-building workshop featured papers on ICT in Teacher Education, Effective School Leadership Management, Financial Management in School Administration, and Drug Abuse and Students’ Poor Performance.
As part of the event, a debate competition involving schools from the three local government areas was held, during which Umaru presented over ₦10 million in cash prizes and laptops to winners. The Shepherd International College, Akwanga, emerged overall winner, receiving a cheque of ₦1 million and five laptops, while Government Science Secondary School, Wamba, and Our Lady of Fatima College, Ogba, came second and third with ₦700,000 and ₦500,000 prizes respectively, along with laptops.
Umaru also awarded cash and educational materials to other participating schools, encouraging students to build confidence, improve public speaking, and network with peers.
He said the debate and training initiatives were designed to empower both teachers and students, adding that he would continue to introduce programmes that promote education, youth development, and community growth across the constituency.
Similarly, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, recently reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning the teaching profession, describing teachers as “the custodians of stability and architects of change” during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Abuja.
