LASG sensitises residents on environment-friendly building construction
The Lagos State Government says it is sensitising stakeholders in the built environment in its continued awareness campaign on the Building Energy Efficiency Code (BEEC).
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, said in a statement on Wednesday that the State Government had subscribed to BEEC to provide solutions to encourage environment-friendly construction in the state.
The Spokesman for the Ministry, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, said in the statement that the Commissioner disclosed this while declaring open a virtual workshop organised in conjunction with the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) on Tuesday.
“For certain, BEEC as a programme, is designed to strengthen efforts to bequeath an organised, livable and sustainable built environment as contained in the THEMES Agenda of Gov. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu,” he said.
Salako enjoined stakeholders in the built environment to embrace the concept and develop technical capacity to drive Lagos State’s socio-economic vision and its contributions toward achieving a cleaner, healthier built environment.
The Commissioner said the government is prepared to launch the Lagos State Building Code and the Green Building initiative soon.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mrs Abiola Kosegbe, explained that the workshop was one of the series targeted at sensitising stakeholders.
She lauded the Nigerian Energy Support Programme for its partnership and expressed hope that the ongoing reforms to regulate the built environment of the state would be achieved.
In another development, the Commissioner also called on Federal and State Ministries, Departments and Agencies to always obtain physical planning approvals before embarking on building construction.
He made the call on Tuesday while receiving the Lagos State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide.
Salako said that the FRSC Sector Commander was on the right track in seeking the ministry’s approval to extend its Ojodu office as no organisation or individual had the right to erect buildings without a planning permit and supervision by the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
