LASCOHT set for upgrade to autonomous institution

The Lagos State Government has initiated the process to upgrade the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHT) in Yaba to an autonomous institution.
This announcement was made by Mr. Tolani Sule, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, during a two-day management retreat.
The retreat, themed ‘Creating a Global Standard Learning Culture for Lagos State College of Health Technology,’ focused on improving the college’s academic and operational framework. Sule highlighted that the current structure aligns with civil service norms, but transitioning to a tertiary institution model will allow for independent employment, promotion, and salary structures.
“We aim to enhance the college’s learning environment, employment, and salary frameworks,” Sule stated. He encouraged academic and non-academic staff to collaborate with the new leadership to elevate the institution’s profile.
Also, Prof. Banji Fajonyomi from Lagos State University urged the management to prioritise student learning over mere grade attainment. He emphasised the importance of mentorship and creating a supportive research environment through workshops and seminars.
Chairman of the Economic Planning & Budget Committee in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Lukman Olumoh, called for the integration of technology to improve revenue allocation for the college’s development and stressed the need for clear communication regarding governance programs.
This strategic upgrade is marked to position LASCOHT as a leading institution in health education, fostering a conducive environment for academic excellence.
Sule said, “Work harder and acquire more knowledge because teaching and learning has become easier through the help of advanced technology.”
Prof. Banji Fajonyomi of the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Management Science, Lagos State University (LASU), advised the management of the institution to concentrate more on students’ learning rather than grades.
Fanjonyomi said that students should be given opportunities to participate in lecture discussions, tackle problems and present findings.
“Mentorship is key. We should be more than lecturers, because each student has individual needs.
“We should show care, empathy, respect and emotional support.
“Creating conducive research environment in the college by continuously inducing the teachers through workshops, projects and seminars are very important,” he said.
The Chairman, Economic Planning & Budget Committee, Lagos State House of Assembly, Lukman Olumoh, urged the management to introduce technology to drive revenue allocation for the institution’s development.
Olumoh said that the management needed to ensure adequate implementation of internal control policies and procedures.
“Communication is key to ensure that people understand the programmes and projects of governance, particularly where the resources are scarce and inadequate,” he said.
