Lagos trains 500 Farmers to strengthen food security

The Lagos State Government has trained over 500 farmers and fishermen in the Ikorodu Division as part of efforts to boost food security and agricultural resilience across the state.

The capacity building forum, organised by the Lagos State Agricultural Input Supply Authority (LAISA) at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat, focused on equipping participants with modern farming and fishing techniques suited to their local environments.

The General Manager of LAISA, Mrs Olufolake Oluyemi, said the training marked a new phase of direct engagement between the government and grassroots producers, aimed at developing community specific agricultural solutions.

“We recognise that the challenges faced by farmers in Ikorodu differ from those in Badagry or Epe. This session is not just a training but a two-way conversation to co-create solutions,” she said.

Representing the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms Abisola Olusanya, the Director of Agribusiness, Mrs Aramide Gansalo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering local producers through access to quality inputs, modern tools, and innovative practices.

She noted that food security is central to economic stability, health, and resilience, stressing that access to certified seeds, fertilisers, and equipment remains key to achieving self-sufficiency.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos Chapter, Mr Femi Oke, commended the state government and LAISA for their consistent support to farmers and fishermen.

The initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu’s vision of building sustainable food systems through innovation, stakeholder collaboration, and targeted investment in local agriculture.
