Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the Lagos State Government is installing 50,000 streetlights across the metropolis as part of renewed efforts to strengthen security and improve safety for residents and visitors.
The governor disclosed this on Monday during a live appearance on Journalists’ Hangout, where he engaged journalists and Lagosians on the performance of his administration since assuming office.
Sanwo-Olu said the massive streetlight project is aimed at lighting up major roads, communities and public spaces, noting that improved visibility remains critical to crime prevention and effective policing.
“We are installing 50,000 streetlights in Lagos. We are lighting up everywhere,” the governor said, adding that the initiative forms part of a broader security strategy.
He revealed that the state government has also reinforced security along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and provided additional vehicles to security agencies to enhance rapid response across the state.
According to the governor, Lagos has deployed about 2,000 surveillance cameras across strategic locations to aid intelligence gathering and monitoring, stressing that the government is prepared to respond swiftly to any security threat.
Sanwo-Olu also spoke on the festive season, describing “Detty December” as a period for residents and visitors to experience the hospitality, culture and entertainment Lagos is known for.
“Lagos is very hospitable. We are hoping that in the next two or three weeks, people can feel the city. That is why it is called Detty December,” he said.
On transportation, the governor disclosed that the second phase of the Blue Line rail project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027. He noted that the rail service has already transported over seven million passengers since operations began.
Sanwo-Olu further attributed recent socio-economic improvements in Lagos and other states to increased revenue allocations under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying financial leakages have been blocked and revenues are now better accounted for.
