Lagos to host international football tournament, names trophy after Gov Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State is set to host an exciting international football tournament, with the competition’s trophy named in honour of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recognising his significant contributions to the development of sports in the state.
The two-week pre-season football tournament, organised by SuperSport Nigeria in collaboration with the Eko International Cup, will take place in Lagos and feature eight teams, including four Nigerian clubs—Ikorodu City, Remo Stars, Enyimba, and Shooting Stars—alongside international clubs Dadje FC (Benin), SuperSport United FC (South Africa), Asante Kotoko Sporting Club (Ghana), and Ankaraspor (Turkey).
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his support for the competition, highlighting the opportunities it would create for young footballers and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth development through sports.
“We are proud that Lagos is the host city for this tournament. It will provide a platform for young talents to showcase their skills,” he said.
The competition will feature 15 matches and is expected to attract 22 international scouts, offering hopeful players a chance to be spotted and selected by top clubs.
“The scouts’ involvement is crucial in providing hope for aspiring footballers, and we are thrilled that such a prestigious event is being held in Lagos,” said Felix Awogu, General Manager of SuperSport Nigeria.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also praised the initiative, noting that the tournament reflects his administration’s efforts to transform Lagos into a major sports hub. He added that the government will continue to support such initiatives, creating an environment where both local and international organisations can thrive.
The tournament is expected to not only contribute to the growth of football in Nigeria but also enhance the state’s profile as a destination for major international sporting events. The trophy, named the “Sanwo-Olu Cup,” is a testament to the Governor’s ongoing commitment to sports development and his leadership in the state’s overall transformation.
