The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to tackle youth unemployment through the creative industry, graduating 570 young people under its Eko Studio Culture Programme and urging them to become entrepreneurs capable of creating jobs and wealth.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, stated this on Tuesday at the Eko Studio Culture Graduation Ceremony, themed “Creating Wealth, Elevating Lagos Creatives,” held at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, Alausa.
Sanwo-Olu said the programme forms part of the state’s strategy to build a 21st-century economy driven by innovation, entrepreneurship and the creative sector, noting that the beneficiaries were selected from the five divisions of Lagos.
He disclosed that the recently launched ₦10 billion Cooperative Fund would provide financial support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), including businesses expected to be established by graduates of the programme.
According to him, the global creative economy has evolved beyond entertainment into a major driver of employment, investment and economic growth, with Lagos positioned as Nigeria’s leading creative hub.
The governor urged the graduates to leverage technology, innovation and entrepreneurship to build globally competitive brands instead of relying solely on paid employment.
He said the government’s investment in skills acquisition reflects its belief that empowering young people with practical knowledge remains one of the most effective ways to promote sustainable economic development.
Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, said the Eko Studio Culture Programme equipped participants with practical skills through classroom learning, virtual training, hands-on experience and mentorship from industry professionals.
He described the graduation as a celebration of talent, resilience and opportunity, adding that the initiative was designed to prepare young Lagosians for the rapidly expanding creative economy.
Also speaking, the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to creating opportunities that enable youths to innovate, become self-reliant and contribute to Lagos economic growth.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dream Music Hall Academy, Mr. Bolaji Williams, said the programme bridges the gap between creativity and commerce by equipping participants with entrepreneurship, finance and business management skills needed to build sustainable careers. He added that Lagoss bi entertainment industry generated an estimated $10.8 billion between 2024 and 2025, underscoring the sector’s growing contribution to the state’s economy.
