The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of failing to adequately prepare for the rainy season, saying the negligence has worsened flooding across the state.

The allegation was contained in the June 13, 2026 edition of PDP’s “The Umbrella Newsletter”.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday, the opposition party expressed concern over the condition of roads, drainage systems and public infrastructure as heavy rainfall continues to affect residents and businesses.

The party recalled that on January 21, 2026, it warned the state government about the need for urgent preparations ahead of the rainy season.

According to the PDP, the government failed to act on those warnings, leaving many communities vulnerable to flooding.

The party said roads have become impassable in several parts of the state, while blocked drainage channels have worsened the situation.

It added that businesses have suffered losses, commuters have been stranded and many residents have experienced damage to their homes and properties as a result of floodwaters.

The PDP argued that the current situation goes beyond a natural disaster and reflects what it described as a failure of governance.

The opposition party maintained that after more than two decades in power, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) can no longer blame others for recurring flooding, deteriorating roads and inadequate drainage infrastructure in Lagos.

As part of its recommendations, the PDP called on the Lagos State Government to immediately declare an infrastructure emergency and publish a transparent account of funds allocated to drainage and flood-control projects.

The party also appealed to the government to provide relief materials for affected residents and businesses, establish clear timelines for the rehabilitation of damaged roads and drainage channels, and launch public awareness campaigns on flood prevention and emergency response.

“The APC was warned. It ignored those warnings,” the party stated, adding that the effects of the flooding are now visible in flooded streets, stranded commuters and struggling businesses across the state.

The statement was signed by Prince Dr. Christopher Odianarewo, Lagos State PDP Publicity Secretary.

The PDP insisted that while rainfall may have triggered the flooding, the scale of the crisis was largely the result of inadequate planning and poor infrastructure management.
