Lagos launches Eko Learners’ initiative to boost WAEC, NECO performance
By Sodiq Adelakun
Lagos State has launched a transformative initiative aimed at propelling candidates for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) towards academic excellence.
The new program, dubbed “Eko Learners’ Support,” was officially unveiled at the Education Resource Centre in Lagos on January 14, 2025, by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun.
Describing the initiative as a game-changer for the state’s education system, Alli-Balogun explained that it was designed to equip students with the resources necessary to excel in their external examinations.
The program will feature a comprehensive broadcast of 320 lessons in 10 critical subjects, including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Government, History, Literature-in-English, and Yoruba.
These lessons, delivered by expert educators rigorously vetted by the state government, will be aired on Lagos Television and made available across social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
“The Eko Learners’ Support program is not just an academic resource, but an opportunity for students to actively engage with the materials at their own pace,” Alli-Balogun said at the launch.
The lessons are aligned with the WAEC and NECO syllabi, ensuring that the content is both relevant and comprehensive.
The sequential nature of the lessons will also provide students with the flexibility to revisit any topic they might have missed or need more clarity on.
“This initiative provides a platform for private engagement with educational content. Students can give feedback, ask questions, and collaborate with both their peers and teachers,” Alli-Balogun added.
The state government emphasized that the Eko Learners’ Support program mirrors its unwavering commitment to improving educational outcomes, a goal it has consistently pursued through successful initiatives like the EKOEXCEL program.
The EKOEXCEL initiative has gained national and international recognition for its innovative approach to educational reforms.
While urging students to make the most of the opportunity, Alli-Balogun noted that success would ultimately depend on the candidates’ commitment, hard work, and perseverance.
He told the candidates that education was a lifelong journey, and the Lagos State Government remained steadfast in its support of their academic and personal growth
