Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has denied allegations of assault that surfaced following a viral video.
The incident occurred during a meeting at the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture Android History, where, according to the Commissioner, non-state actors illegally intruded and began recording proceedings without permission.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Seriki Omowunmi, Benson-Awoyinka explained that the viral video, which depicted her allegedly assaulting an individual, was taken out of context.
The Commissioner attributed the disruptive behavior to unauthorized individuals, accompanied by the Centre’s Director, Mr. Qudus Onikeku, who entered the meeting forcefully and began recording without consent, thus breaching established administrative protocols.
Benson-Awoyinka’s office further clarified that the altercation was not instigated by her but involved a senior female staff member of her team who was physically assaulted by the intruders, escalating the confrontation.
For context, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka also alleged that Onikeku was operating an unapproved canteen at the Centre, and when confronted, resisted eviction, resulting in a violent clash.
“It is imperative to note that Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka did not assault anyone. Rather, it was a member of her team who suffered physical harm in the incident, which was wrongly portrayed in the viral footage,” the statement emphasized.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to transparent governance and a rigorous investigation into the matter.
It warned the public to dismiss misleading portrayals of the episode and to focus on its continued efforts to serve the residents of Lagos with integrity.
The statement also highlighted the importance of adhering to official procedures, particularly in situations where meetings and events are being recorded.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Ministry assured the public that appropriate actions would be taken.
The Ministry expressed its dedication to enhancing Lagos State’s tourism sector, dismissing any negative portrayals of the Commissioner’s conduct.
“Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka will continue to discharge her duties in the best interests of Lagosians,” the statement added.
