Lagos Businessman disappears following vigilante raid

Concerns have been raised regarding the whereabouts of Hakeem Olalekan Adegoke, a Lagos-based businessman, who has reportedly been missing since a late-night raid on an alleged private gathering in Amuwo Odofin.
According to local sources, the incident occurred on August 24, 2024, when members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) vigilante group disrupted a meeting after receiving tips regarding an LGBTQ support network gathering.
The sudden intervention caused a chaotic scene as attendees fled the premises to avoid detention, and Mr. Adegoke has not been seen or heard from by associates or family members in the time following the event.
The incident highlights the severe legal landscape surrounding private associations in Nigeria under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014.
The legislation imposes harsh penalties, including up to 14 years of imprisonment for same-sex relationships and 10 years for participating in or supporting related organizations.
While the specific nature of the meeting in Amuwo Odofin remains unconfirmed, the subsequent disappearance of Mr. Adegoke has sparked local discussion regarding the role of vigilante groups in enforcing state laws.
As of the time of this report, official law enforcement agencies have not released a statement regarding the businessman's status or the legality of the vigilante raid.
