Lagos Blue line rail hits milestone with over 2m passengers

By Seun Ibiyemi

The Lagos State Government has announced that over two million passengers have been transported via the Blue Line Rail since its official launch.

The milestone was disclosed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa.

The announcement comes as part of a broader progress report on the state’s transport sector under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, marking the second year of his second term.

Osiyemi stated that Phase 1 of the Blue Line, which runs from Marina to Mile 2, has seen significant adoption, while construction on Phase 2 toward Okokomaiko is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Red Line’s Phase 1 (Agbado to Oyingbo) is now operational with eight stations, and expansion efforts continue.

Complementing rail progress, state-run buses now move over 42,000 commuters daily, contributing to more than 60 million riders served since 2019.

Infrastructure improvements include the commissioning of the Abule Egba Bus Terminal and development of new Quality Bus Corridors.

Water transport also saw a boost with the launch of 15 locally-built Omibus Ferries and upgrades to 12 boats.

The Ijegun Egba Terminal is operational, and the OMI EKO project—developed with the French Development Agency—promises 25 terminals and 78 electric ferries.

In road traffic management, 49 junctions have been upgraded, ANPR cameras have flagged over 470,000 violations, and over 1 million vehicles received roadworthiness certificates. Training programs for drivers and LASTMA officials also featured prominently.

The updates reflect Lagos’ commitment to building an inclusive, safe, and sustainable transport ecosystem.
