Lagos Assembly commends police command for professionalism

…Calls for stronger community role in security

The Lagos State House of Assembly has applauded the Commissioner of Police, CP Olorundare Moshood Jimoh, and his team for demonstrating professionalism and commitment to safeguarding lives and property during recent security incidents in the state.

The commendation followed a motion presented by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security and Strategy, during plenary.

Hon. Ogundipe stressed the need for stronger community involvement in security, describing public safety as a shared responsibility. He called for improved community awareness, crime reporting mechanisms, and robust public education.

He also urged the adoption of safety protocols across schools, commercial hubs, and public spaces, backed by surveillance systems and regular risk assessments.

The lawmaker further recommended continuous training for security personnel to boost efficiency and responsiveness.

He commended the Lagos State Security Trust Fund for sustaining security infrastructure and praised the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, for championing the Neighbourhood Safety Corps initiative, which has since been adopted by several other states.

In his contribution, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu described the motion as timely, noting that the Police had become the backbone of security in Lagos, particularly during festive seasons. According to him, their performance encouraged many residents in the diaspora to return home.

“The Police have improved remarkably in crime detection—even in the absence of forensic tools,” he added.

Following deliberations, the House resolved that collaboration among stakeholders, especially at the community level, must be strengthened to create a secure environment.

It also recommended proactive preventive measures, including improved surveillance and safety systems in schools, markets, and public areas.

Hon. Ogundipe cautioned against the misuse of social media, warning that irresponsible content could worsen security challenges.

He further urged the Commissioner of Police to maintain active engagement with the Assembly leadership to tackle emerging security threats and rising social vices across the state.
