Labour Party politician flees Nigeria

…As opposition burns houses, cars

A Labour Party politician from Ogun State, Oluwaseun Oladeji Taiwo, has fled the country, leaving his wife and children behind in Nigeria over incessant persecution, victimisation and threat to dear life.

Taiwo’s travail began with his ardent support for the Labour Party and its presidential candidate at the 2023 election, Peter Obi. His loyalty to the party was not well received by his local community who believed that the Labour Party is Igbo or South-Eastern Nigeria oriented and so should not be supported by any well-meaning Yoruba person.

When the Labour Party lost the presidential election, the attacks and persecutions on Taiwo increased such that his house and car were burnt. However, the opposition did not stop at this, it was out to put a total end to Taiwo’s life and those of his family. Things became so dangerous that he was forced to relocate his wife, Mariam Omolara Taiwo and his two sons, Samson Oluwadamilare Taiwo and Israel Oluwakayode Taiwo, to the village with his in-laws, while he fled the country.

According to information gathered from sources who preferred to remain anonymous, Taiwo had to borrow substantial amounts of money from some friends and others to survive. It was the constant threat to his life coupled with his inability to repay the loans that he took that forced him to flee to the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, members of the opposition party are still out for Taiwo’s head, while his creditors are also committed to get their money back by all means.
