Labour Day: Lawyers deserve improved welfare, says Tam-George
A former Vice Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Mrs Abiye Tam-George, has called for improved working conditions and welfare for legal practitioners in Nigeria.
Tam-George underscored the urgent need for better labour relations within the Nigerian legal community and urged law firms to prioritise the well-being of their lawyers.
She made the call in Lagos during an interview with the Newsmen in commemoration of Workers’ Day.
Newsmen reports that Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is celebrated annually on May 1.
It is a public holiday in over 80 countries, dedicated to honouring the contributions of workers, promoting their rights, and commemorating the global labour movement.
According to Tam-George, the day should not only be one of celebration but also of serious reflection on the challenges faced by Nigerian lawyers.
“Beyond the celebration, we must also confront the painful reality that many in our profession continue to endure unthinkable hardships,” she said.
“Across courtrooms, chambers, corporate offices, and public service, lawyers are stretched, facing long hours, mounting pressure, dwindling remuneration, and, at times, outright neglect.
“Yet, in the midst of it all, we rise; we continue to defend justice, give voice to the voiceless, and uphold the rule of law.”
Tam-George called for collective efforts to find sustainable solutions to these challenges, including innovation, improved welfare systems, stronger mentorship, and advocacy for better conditions.
“I believe a better legal profession is not only possible, it is within reach,” she added.
She also urged lawyers not to be discouraged by the weight of their struggles but to remain motivated by the opportunities for progress.
“We must work together to shape the future of our profession, one in which every lawyer is valued, supported, and empowered,” she said.
