The Kwara State Government has announced the establishment of a fully equipped Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Ilorin, describing it as a major milestone in its efforts to enhance healthcare delivery across the state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, made the disclosure in an official statement, noting that the newly launched ICU forms part of a larger strategy to improve access to advanced medical care and raise the standard of healthcare services in both urban and rural communities.
“This initiative represents a bold step towards widening the reach of quality healthcare services for all Kwarans,” the statement read.
According to Dr El-Imam, the ICU is designed to deliver lifesaving interventions to critically ill patients and strengthen the capacity of medical personnel to provide specialist care in a modern clinical setting. She added that the facility would also serve as a training ground for medical professionals and a hub for clinical research.
“The availability of an ICU at KWASUTH not only improves patient outcomes but also creates an environment that supports continuous learning and development for our healthcare workers,” she explained.
The Commissioner commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for what she described as unwavering support and consistent investment in the state’s health sector. She described the ICU as a reflection of the administration’s broader commitment to revamping the healthcare system through infrastructural upgrades, capacity building, and strategic reforms.
Dr El-Imam gave assurances that the state government remains focused on ensuring that no resident is denied urgent medical attention due to a lack of facilities. “This ICU stands as a symbol of hope for families during medical emergencies. It underscores the government’s resolve to bridge gaps in critical care services,” she said.
She also encouraged health professionals in the state to uphold the highest standards of ethics and diligence in delivering patient care.
In her words, “We call on our medical personnel to match this infrastructural progress with a renewed sense of responsibility and excellence.”
Kwara residents were advised to take full advantage of the upgraded facilities at the teaching hospital, with the Commissioner reaffirming the government’s long-term vision of making quality healthcare accessible, affordable, and sustainable for all.
