Kwara Govt demotes teacher for assaulting corps member
…NYSC withdraws members from school

The Kwara State Government has taken disciplinary action against a teacher at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, following allegations of assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.
The teacher, Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, has been demoted by two-grade levels and will be transferred to another school.
This was revealed in a joint statement issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, on Tuesday.
The investigative panel set up to probe the incident found the teacher guilty of fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the national identity represented by the NYSC uniform.
“Her behavior contravenes public service rules,” the statement noted, adding that she will also undergo counseling sessions. The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring such incidents do not occur again.
“The State Government will not tolerate such abuse under any guise. We deeply regret the teacher’s action and reassure the NYSC management that this development does not reflect the values of the state. It will not happen again,” the statement added.
Teachers in the state were urged to remain law-abiding and to perform their duties in line with established guidelines. The government also emphasized its commitment to providing training on professional ethics and service procedures.
Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has temporarily withdrawn all corps members serving in the school. This includes about 10 members serving in both the junior and senior sections of the institution.
The NYSC State Directorate reportedly took the decision on Monday after allegations emerged that some female teachers at the school assaulted a corps member for failing to greet them.
The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed, visited the school before inspecting the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2, corps members at the Yikpata orientation camp in Edu Local Government Area. He directed the withdrawal of corps members from the school to prioritize their safety.
The Kwara State Government and NYSC management have called for calm while further steps are taken to address the situation.
