The Kogi State Government has announced plans to renovate 728 public schools under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) programme.

The Deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu, disclosed this at the launch of the project held at the Government House in Lokoja on Thursday.

He described the initiative as a significant milestone in the state’s education transformation agenda, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to prioritising education.

“Today’s event is not merely ceremonial; it is a clear demonstration of this administration’s resolve to invest in the future of our state through education,” he said.

Salifu noted that no meaningful development can take place without a strong and functional education system supported by safe, inclusive, and conducive learning infrastructure.

He added that many schools across the state have existed for decades and now require urgent upgrading to meet modern educational standards.

“The renovation of 728 government-owned schools is not just an intervention; it is a bold statement of intent. It affirms that every child in Kogi State deserves a decent place to learn,” he said.

The State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, said the project reflects the government’s commitment to revitalising the education sector.

He noted that the administration is taking deliberate steps to make education more accessible and affordable.

Jones disclosed that over N1.4bn has been approved to support examination fees for students writing WAEC and NECO, adding that the initiative will enhance educational development.

He further revealed that arrangements are underway to commence training for Computer-Based Testing (CBT), to better prepare students for modern examination systems.

The AGILE Project Coordinator in the state, Comrade Tijani Oricha, said the initiative is designed to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

According to him, the renovation will strengthen school systems and enhance the overall learning environment across the state.

He added that 30 service providers have been engaged to commence work on 150 schools in the first phase of the project.

Oricha emphasised the need for transparency and professionalism, noting that the project will be closely monitored to ensure quality delivery and value for money.

He said communities across the state are expected to benefit significantly from the intervention.

In his remarks, the Obaro of Kabba, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, commended the government’s efforts, stressing the importance of investing in girls’ education.

Other dignitaries at the event delivered goodwill messages in support of the initiative.
