Keyamo’s appointment as BAG Chair a strategic win for Nigeria — Airline Boss
The Chairman of Bellagio Airline Limited, Dr Oludare Akande, has hailed the appointment of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as Chairman of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG), describing it as a strategic development that strengthens Nigeria’s leadership in regional aviation.
BAG, a collaborative body under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), consists of seven West African countries working together to standardise civil aviation practices and improve regional air safety and efficiency.
Speaking to journalists recently, Dr Akande said the appointment signals a turning point for Nigeria’s aviation sector and reflects growing international recognition of the country’s renewed commitment to reform and leadership in air transport.
“This is more than a personal achievement for the Honourable Minister. It is a strategic gain for Nigeria and an endorsement of our growing influence within Africa’s aviation ecosystem,” Akande remarked.
He said the sector, once beset by regulatory inconsistencies, dwindling foreign interest and investor scepticism, is now undergoing a significant revival driven by infrastructure improvements and policy clarity.
“Nigeria’s aviation industry is undergoing an extraordinary transformation. What we are seeing is not just progress but a complete resurgence anchored on renewed confidence and focused leadership,” Akande said.
He noted that with Keyamo at the helm of BAG, Nigeria is well positioned to shape regional aviation policies and build stronger technical and diplomatic ties with neighbouring countries.
“BAG plays a critical role in harmonising aviation standards across West Africa. Having our minister lead that group gives Nigeria not only a voice but also a hand on the steering wheel of aviation policy in the region,” he added.
Dr Akande also credited the minister with injecting fresh momentum into the industry, citing visible upgrades in airport infrastructure, policy reforms, and increased engagement with international stakeholders.
“At the heart of this new chapter in our aviation story is Festus Keyamo. His leadership is setting the tone for a modern, efficient and investor-friendly sector,” Akande said.
He encouraged continued collaboration between the public and private sectors to sustain the progress and ensure Nigeria becomes a key aviation hub for the continent.
