KEDCO invests N500m to revive IBB way substation, boost power supply in Katsina

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced a ₦500 million investment to rehabilitate the IBB Way Injection Substation and other critical power infrastructure in Katsina State.
The Head of Corporate Communication at KEDCO, Mr. Sani Bala-Sani disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Katsina, describing the move as part of efforts to enhance supply capacity, improve network stability, and ensure more reliable electricity for customers in the Katsina metropolis.
According to him, since the acquisition of KEDCO by Future Energies Africa (FEA) in 2024, the company has consistently implemented a special annual Ramadan intervention programme.
The initiative involves redirecting and boosting electricity supply to residential areas by up to 20 per cent throughout the holy month, with further improvements typically recorded during the Eid celebration period.
Bala-Sani noted that recent power supply challenges across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states were largely due to failures on the national grid.
He explained that the two transmission lines supplying bulk power from Shiroro to the affected states were disrupted, resulting in temporary backfeeding from Jos.
He added that KEDCO promptly escalated the matter to the Minister of Power and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
“We are pleased to report that one of the affected lines has now been restored, leading to noticeable improvements in power supply across the region,” he said.
The company also cited a recent fire incident involving a 15MVA TR3 power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation as a contributing factor to supply disruptions.
“As an interim measure to prevent total blackout for affected customers, the 11kV GRA feeder was merged with the 11kV Army Barracks and 11kV Low-Cost feeders to ensure continued, though limited, power supply, while the damaged transformer is currently being handled under the ongoing project,” Bala-Sani explained.
He assured residents that with the partial restoration of the Shiroro–Kaduna transmission line and firm supply increase commitments secured, electricity availability would improve throughout the Ramadan period.
KEDCO also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, and his administration, particularly the Special Assistant on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, for their proactive engagement and commitment toward improving electricity supply in the state.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with the Katsina State Government to ensure stable and sustainable power supply during Ramadan and beyond.
