Kanu defies court, insists on no case submission in fiery hearing

The atmosphere inside the Federal High Court, Abuja, was tense on Monday as detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, took a defiant stand declaring that he would no longer defend himself in what he described as an “unlawful trial.”

Kanu, who had earlier notified the court of plans to call witnesses in his defence, stunned observers when he announced that he had changed his mind after reviewing the case file.

“I have gone through the case file, and I am convinced there is no valid charge against me,” he told the court firmly. “I see no reason to continue with a defence in an unlawful proceeding.”

The sudden turn of events halted what was expected to be the opening of Kanu’s defence in his long-running trial for alleged terrorism and treasonable felony. The prosecution had earlier closed its case, setting the stage for him to prove his innocence.

Presiding Judge Justice James Omotosho appeared calm but cautious. He directed Kanu to file a written address formally stating his position and to serve it on the prosecution. The judge also warned him to seek legal advice, reminding the defendant of the possible implications of refusing to mount a defence.

The case, which has dragged on for years, now hangs in the balance. Justice Omotosho adjourned proceedings to November 4, 5, and 6, when the court will either hear final written addresses or allow Kanu another chance to enter his defence if he chooses to.

Observers say Kanu’s bold stance underscores his long held claim that his trial is politically motivated. For many of his supporters, it is a show of defiance; for others, it raises serious questions about due process, fair hearing, and the credibility of Nigeria’s justice system.

As the courtroom emptied on Monday, Kanu remained resolute seated behind the dock, calm but unyielding his decision once again steering the direction of one of Nigeria’s most watched trials.
