Kano commends Lagos transport reforms as blueprint for modern mobility

The Kano State Government has hailed Lagos State for its remarkable transformation of the transport sector, describing it as a continental model for modern mobility and urban planning.

The commendation came during an official study tour of Lagos by senior officials of the Kano State Transport Authority, led by Commissioner for Transportation, Haruna Isa Dederi.

Dederi said the visit aligns with the directive of Governor Abba Yusuf, who recently inaugurated a committee to reposition the Kano State Transport Authority for better service delivery and efficiency.

During the tour, the Kano delegation examined Lagos’s transport ecosystem  including the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, the operations of Traffic Radio, the state’s inland waterways, and the LAMATA master plan.

According to Dederi, Lagos has set a benchmark for organised urban transport through institutional restructuring, technology-driven operations, public-private partnerships, and infrastructure renewal.

“Lagos stands as a reference point across Africa for how an urban transport system should function — structured, connected, and sustainable,” he said.

Receiving the delegation, Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Olawale Musa, assured Kano of full technical support in its reform process.

Musa said Lagos’s achievements were products of long-term planning and consistent investment, stressing that no economy can thrive without a functional and predictable transport framework.

“Both Lagos and Kano face similar challenges arising from rapid population growth and urbanisation. Continuous upgrades in infrastructure are essential to meet public mobility needs,” he said.

He added that Lagos would continue to collaborate with Kano in areas that promote mobility efficiency, urban planning, and sustainable service delivery.
