Kaduna: Police arrest 985 phone snatchers, others in two months

Kaduna State Police Command said that they have arrested Nine Hundred and Eighty-five (985) suspected phone snatchers and 73 Armed Robbery suspects terrorising communities in the state in the last two months.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Audu Dabigi disclosed this at a press conference held in Kaduna on Thursday, said that they also arrested seventy (70) Kidnapping suspects, nine (9) Bandits were neutralised and seven (7) locally made Arms were recovered.

According to him, “1,817 rounds of live ammunition were recovered, eight (8) Motor vehicles of different brands were recovered,eight (8) suspects arrested in connection with Car-theft and 7 Motorcycles of different brands were recovered.

“The CP said Five (5) AK47 Rifles were recovered, one (1) Tricycle was recovered, one (1) suspected Railway vandal was arrested, 29 rustled cattle were recovered.

“On 3rd May, 2024 at about 1330hrs, the arrest took place following a credible intelligence report. The suspect Naim Mikaila, a resident of Kajuru in Kaduna State was found in possession of One hundred (100) pieces of railway tracks. During interrogation, Mikaila was unable to provide satisfactory explanation for the possession of these items, leading to the suspicion that they were stolen property.

“Arrest of Eight (8) Notorious Armed Robbery Suspects, Three (3) Receivers and a Cyber Criminal who specialises in unlocking phones and alteration of I.M.E Numbers:On 9th May, 2024 around 0300hrs, a surveillance patrol team from Unguwan Rimi Division, Kaduna intercepted three (3) suspects – Khalid Lawal, Abdulhamid Zubairu and Musa Yusuf along Yakowa Expressway.

“Investigation further revealed that, the suspects who were armed with guns, knives and matchets conspired with their conspirators led the Police to the arrest of additional criminals namely – Aminu Aliyu (a.k.a Bosho), Idris Ibrahim, Musa Muhammed, Abubakar Lawal (a.k.a. Dan Master) and Alhassan Musa.

“They targeted several hotels in the metropolis which includes; ABELLO, Geometry, Harmony and Apple Gate Hotel, robbing lodgers and staff of valuable items like motor vehicles, mobile phones and computers. In one incident, they severed a victim’s right hand. During investigation, two (2) motor vehicles, one (1) Tricycle, one (1) motorcycle and twenty-two (22) mobile handsets were recovered.

“All the suspects have confessed to their crimes and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Kaduna for further investigations.

“Arrest of an International Car Theft Suspect and Recovery of a Lexus Jeep and Car Anti-Tracker Jammer:On 27th May, 2024 Operatives received a tip-off from a Good Samaritan who suspected that a Lexus LX470 Jeep which he was asked to collect from a mechanic was stolen.

“The Operatives recovered the vehicle and discovered that it was robbed from the owner at gunpoint at Utako in Abuja. Surveillance led to the arrest of one Mubarak Kabiru in Kaduna, where search revealed an Anti-Tracking Jammer in his hotel room. Mubarak Kabiru confessed to transporting stolen vehicles under the directives of his boss, one Dauda from Niger Republic and selling them in Niger Republic. The suspect has been handed over to FCT Command, for further investigation.

“Arrest of a Seventy 70 Year old Suspected Armed Bandit and Recovery of an AK47 Rifle:On 29th May, 2024 at about 0130hrs, following credible intelligence about suspicious movement of an armed bandit, the Divisional Police Officer, Tudun Wada Zaria Division made a swift action resulting to the arrest of one Hussaini ‘m’ 70 years old from Tudun Wada Zaria.

“The arrest took place at about 0250hrs. During the operation, an AK47 Rifle, a locally made pistol and three (3) cartridges were recovered from the suspect. The suspect is helping the Police in investigations to apprehend his accomplice and will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed.

“On 29th May, 2024 acting on a tip-off from a concerned citizen, a joint patrol team comprising Officers from the Saminka Division and the Hunters Group in Lere Local Government Area, successfully arrested three (3) suspects involved in kidnapping and cattle rustling. The suspects are:-Isah Baffa Rabo ‘m’ 30 years old from Maibindiga Village, Lere LGA, implicated in kidnappings for ransom in Zangon Kataf LGA and Kachia LGA.Ja’afaru Sale ‘m’ 30 years old from Durumi Village, Lere LGA.Umar Musa ‘m’ 24 years old from Durumi Village, Lere LGA.

“The suspects confessed to be part of the kidnapping syndicate in Lere LGA and admitted to stealing two (2) cattle, which they sold to Idris Abubakar ‘m’ 47 years old from Dokan Lere, who was arrested. Recovered items include – a locally made single barrel gun, a cutlass and three (3) mobile phones. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Kaduna for further investigation.

“Arrest of a Notorious Marabout linked to Kidnapper Buderi and Recovery of Nine (9) Suspected Rustled Cattle:On 20th June, 2024 at about 1400hrs, the Operation Yaki Tracking and Response Team acted promptly on intelligence.

“The team tracked and arrested the most wanted spiritual leader, identified as one Mallam Ali Bello ‘m’ 47 years old in his shrine located around Kidandan Forest. The team also arrested a confessed kidnapper, one Usman Ibrahim, 35 years old who was seeking spiritual assistance.”

NDLEA intercepts N7.3bn codeine consignment in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), on Sunday said it intercepted 6,125 cartons of codeine syrup worth N7.3 billion in Rivers.

This is contained in a statement signed by NDLEA’s Director, Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi on Sunday in Abuja.

Babafemi said that the intercepted cartons contained 1,050,000 bottles of the opioid worth over N7.3 billion street value, at the Port Harcourt Ports complex, Onne, Rivers l.

According to him, the seizure made from six containers on Saturday, is the third of such in the past four weeks.

He said that the drugs were seized following credible intelligence and diligent tracking of the consignments from their port of departure by a special operations unit of NDLEA.

Babafemi also said that the operatives worked in partnership with the Port Harcourt, Ports Command of the agency and other security agencies.

This, he said, included the Nigeria Customs Service for a 100 per cent joint examination of the targeted containers.

“At the end of the joint examination of the six containers, a total of 6,125 cartons containing 1,050,000 bottles of codeine syrup weighing 157,500 kilograms were recovered, “he said.

Babafemi further said that NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos, arrested two passengers travelling to Doha on a Qatar Airways flight at the screening point of terminal 2.

He said that the arrest came after they tested positive to ingestion of illicit substances on Friday.

“The suspects: Aikhomoun Daniel (alias Oladapo Olanrewaju) and Ayigoro Omobolaji were thereafter taken into observatory custody.

“While Daniel excreted a total of 90 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.022kg in six excretions, Ayigoro discharged 60 wraps of the same Class A substance with a total weight of 662grams in five excretions.

“Further investigation revealed that Aikhomoun Daniel actually stole the identity of his late uncle who was once based in Germany.

“This is a decision he claimed he took to get a Schengen visa to enable him free access to Europe, while his real name is Oladapo Olanrewaju, “he said.

Police arrest robbery suspect in Lagos, recover firearms

Operatives of  Lagos Police  Command have arrested  a suspected armed robber in Idimu area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a post he shared on his X handle @benHundeyin on Sunday.

He said that the suspect was arrested on Sunday during a patrol of the axis(Idimu)

“Today, at 3: 00 a.m. at Pipeline Street, Idimu, the suspect was arrested by officers from Idimu Division.

“When searched, one locally made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered, ” the spokesperson said.

Troops nab 47 suspected rail track vandals in Kaduna

The 1 Division Nigerian Army  Kaduna said its operatives have arrested 47 suspected rail track vandals.
The division’s acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations Officer,  Lt.- Col, Musa Yahaya, made the disclosure on Saturday in Kaduna.
Yahaya said , “The arrest was made by the troops while on routine patrol along  Kakau Daji- Anguwan Ayaba, they intercepted and arrested 47 suspected rail track vandals on June 26.”
He said the suspects had loaded  two  trucks with the vandalized rail tracks before their arrests.
Yahaya stated that the suspects revealed that they were employed by one Alhaji Babawo, who is at large, to load the vandalized rail tracks and off- load the same in a nearby bush along the road.
He disclosed that the  suspects were profiled  at the 312 Artillery Regiment Kaduna.
The acting Commander, 1 Division Provost Group, Lt..- Col. IY Rena, was quoted as stating that the suspects were  profiled to ascertain their level of involvement  during preliminary investigation.
He further stated that the suspects were also individually interviewed and cross-examined while efforts were in place to arrest the gang leader who is currently at large.
Rena added that on visit to the crime scene, some of the vandalized rail tracks were found concealed in the nearby bush waiting to be evacuated by the criminal syndicates.
The suspects were handed over to the authorities of  the Nigerian Railway  Corporation, Kaduna Station , represented by the Divisional Crime Officer.
Rena urged the relevant security agencies to make adequate arrangements and deliberate efforts to secure the rail tracks from further vandalisation.
The representative of the corporation and Divisional Crime Officer,  ASP Inuwa Dahiru,  commended the troops for their proactiveness and  collaboration  with other security agencies in tackling the mirage of security challenges confronting the state.
He assured the Nigerian Army that all the 47 suspects would be thoroughly investigated before they were charged to Court  to serve as a deterrent to  other criminally-minded persons.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Operation Whirl Punch, Maj.-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, commended the troops for their professional conduct during and after the successful arrest of the suspects.
