June 12: Sokoto ADC guber candidate urges renewed commitment to democratic ideals

Alhaji Mannir Dan’Iya, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Sokoto State, has called for renewed commitment to democratic ideals, including accountability, security, and people-centred development.

Dan’Iya made the call in a statement issued to journalists in Sokoto on Friday to commemorate Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

According to him, June 12 remains a significant milestone in the nation’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance.

He said democracy extends beyond periodic elections, stressing that it should translate into improved welfare for citizens, protection of lives and property, stronger institutions, and sustainable development.

“June 12 represents the triumph of the people’s will and the resilience of Nigerians in the pursuit of democratic governance.

“It reminds us that government exists to serve the people and improve their quality of life,” he said.

Dan’Iya, however, expressed concern over the country’s socio-economic and security challenges, including the rising cost of living, unemployment, and declining purchasing power.

He noted that in spite of the achievements recorded since the return to democratic rule in 1999, many Nigerians still expect greater dividends of democracy.

The ADC candidate said the current challenges facing the nation require visionary leadership, inclusive governance, and policies that prioritise citizens’ welfare.

Dan’Iya urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic values and peaceful political participation.

He also encouraged eligible citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in the electoral process.

“Democracy thrives when citizens participate. The PVC remains a lawful and peaceful instrument through which Nigerians can choose and hold leaders accountable.

“Therefore, every eligible voter should ensure they are properly registered to exercise their constitutional rights,” he advocated.

Dan’Iya reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to promoting good governance, transparency, security, economic growth, and inclusive development across Nigeria.

He congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day and expressed optimism that through unity, responsible leadership, and collective effort, Nigeria would overcome its current challenges and achieve greater progress.
