The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), in partnership with UNICEF, has launched a one-day tree planting campaign aimed at curbing the growing threat of desertification and drought across the state.

The initiative commenced at New Roads, Takur, near the residence of the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly in Dutse, the state capital.

The campaign was led by the Managing Director of JISEPA, Dr Adamu Sabo, alongside a UNICEF representative and the Director of the Jigawa State Ministry of Environment.

According to the organisers, the exercise was timed to coincide with the global observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

Speaking to journalists after the event, Dr Sabo described the campaign as a tangible effort to counter the environmental degradation plaguing the state.

As part of the initiative, over 500 trees are expected to be planted in Dutse and surrounding areas. To support the campaign, students from environmental science departments across various colleges in Jigawa were mobilised for the planting activities.

Dr Sabo also disclosed that the students will be deployed to conduct awareness campaigns within local communities, aimed at educating residents on the importance of afforestation.

Drawing attention to the urgency of the crisis, Dr Sabo explained that desertification and prolonged drought remain among the most serious environmental challenges facing Jigawa. He warned of the potential consequences for agriculture, water availability, and rural livelihoods if immediate action is not taken.

“This campaign forms part of a broader effort to safeguard our environment, protect our land, and inform communities about the risks of environmental degradation,” he said.

Dr Sabo appealed to residents, traditional institutions, and civil society groups to actively support the project by ensuring the trees are properly maintained and protected.

“Tree planting is more than a symbolic gesture. It is a vital action that every community must embrace amid escalating climate pressures,” he added.
