Jigawa partners with Saudi Experts to revolutionize Date Palm industry

In a major move to solidify Jigawa State’s position as Nigeria’s agricultural powerhouse, Governor Malam Umar Namadi held high-level strategic talks with the Saudi Arabian Date Palm Foundation yesterday.
The meeting, hosted at the Saudi Arabian Consul General’s residence in Kano, focused on integrating world-class Saudi expertise to modernize date palm cultivation through advanced biotechnology.
The collaboration, led by Professor Ahmad Al-Jabbar of King Fahad University, aims to overhaul traditional farming methods.
The Jigawa State Government intends to deploy cutting-edge technologies, specifically molecular segregation and tissue culture, to ensure superior seed quality and significantly higher yields.
Governor Namadi emphasized that while Jigawa is already Nigeria’s leading date producer, the state must transition to scientific production to compete globally.
This initiative marks the second major engagement between the state and Saudi partners, highlighting a growing diplomatic and economic alliance rooted in education and agriculture.
The Governor outlined an ambitious roadmap for the sector that balances commercial growth with social investment.
The state is currently conducting a comprehensive survey of all existing date palm trees while simultaneously preparing to establish new plantations in five strategic locations. This massive planting drive aims to introduce 10,000 offshoots, covering both local and high-value commercial varieties.
The project is also a cornerstone for job creation. With 1,042 hectares already under cultivation, the scheme currently supports 400 youths, with immediate plans to expand participation to 1,000 individuals.
Under this sustainable livelihood model, each participating youth is allocated half a hectare to manage, ensuring inclusive growth and long-term financial stability.
Accompanied by key officials, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and the heads of the Agricultural Transformation Agency and Research Institute, Governor Namadi reiterated that the ultimate goal is export readiness. By boosting farmer capacity and adopting modern practices, the state expects to see a surge in rural incomes and a new stream of foreign exchange.
"This is sure to boost productivity, increase farmers’ incomes, and enhance export potential," the Governor stated, affirming his commitment to transforming Jigawa's agricultural landscape.
